The Colton Joint Unified School District school nurses screen students' hearing and vision annually per state law (Ed. Code 49455).
Nurses screen vision and hearing for students in TK, K, 2nd, 5th, and 8th grades. Hearing and vision screenings are also done on special education students for their initial and their 3-year evaluation. Parents/guardians are informed of any abnormal findings by parent notification letters
Students in 11th grade are screened for hearing only.
Vision screenings include far and near vision. Color vision will be tested once only in 1st grade male pupils.
Students will also undergo vision and hearing screening based on a referral from the classroom teacher and/or during the assessment for qualification for special education services. If a student is found with an issue during screening a letter of referral is sent home to be shared with the students health care provider.
A parent/guardian may opt out a student of the hearing and/or vision screenings by submitting a written request to the school of attendance.
