Literature Advisory Committee
Literature Advisory Committee
The CJUSD Core and Extended Literature List is composed of titles requested and reviewed by CJUSD staff, students, parents, and the community. These titles are intended to reflect the district's philosophy and values, respond to student needs and abilities, and are consistent with the requirements of the Law. The Literature Advisory Committee evaluates proposed texts against established criteria to ensure quality and appropriateness for CJUSD students. Committee members read each text, analyze its educational merit, and meet to discuss their findings. Recommendations are then forwarded to the Curriculum Council for consideration and possible presentation to the CJUSD Board.

Grading Policy
Student Grades
High School grades are based on the overall work and attainment of standards for the full term. This means that progress and quarter reports are not final grades; they are reports to parents/students about the student's work up to that point. District policy is not to average grades for the quarter, but to maintain a running record of the student's work until the final semester grade is posted on the day after the last day of student attendance for the semester.
Semester grades are the ONLY grades that remain on students' permanent academic transcripts.
The District's grading scale is as follows:
Grade percentages are based on the approved grading policy for each course. These can be found in the course description for the course.
The grade point average, or GPA, is recorded for each student for the term and as a running total for their four years of high school. GPA is used to determine eligibility for athletics, extracurricular, and concurrent enrollment at college programs, and is a determining factor for college acceptance.
To figure out GPA, a student's class grade is multiplied by the amount of credits earned. These are totaled and divided by the total number of credits earned that term. Grades of W, NM, and P are not used to figure out GPA.
A= 4 points B = 3 points C = 2 points D = 1 point F = 0 points
|
Example: A student took five classes and earned five credits for each course. Their grades were A, B, C, D, and F A grade > 4 points times 5 credits earned = 20 B grade > 3 points times 5 credits earned = 15 C grade > 2 points times 5 credits earned = 10 D grade > 1 point times 5 credits earned = 5 F grade > 0 points times 5 credits earned = 0 |
Total credits earned = 25/50 grade points = 2.0 GPA 2.0 GPA is a C average
|
The California Education Code 49066 (education law) places the teacher as the determiner of student academic performance. Their grades are final and may only be challenged if a clerical or mechanical mistake, fraud, bad faith, or incompetence can be proven. Bad faith may be proven if the teacher did not comply with the District's/course description grading policy. To appeal a grade, contact the teacher first. If you are unsatisfied with the results of that meeting, contact your site administrator with a written request and provide evidence to support your appeal. You will be notified of the results of your appeal within 30 days.

AVID
The AVID Curriculum
The AVID curriculum, based on rigorous standards, was developed by middle and senior high school teachers in collaboration with college
What is AVID?
AVID stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination. The AVID Program is an elementary and secondary system designed to prepare students for four-year college eligibility. It has a proven track record in bringing out the best in students and in closing the achievement gap.
The AVID Student
AVID targets students who have the desire to go to college and the willingness to work hard. Typically, they will be the first in their families to attend college.
The AVID Elective
Not only are students enrolled in classes, such as Honors and Advanced Placement, but they are also placed in the AVID elective. For one period a day, they learn organizational and study skills, work on critical thinking and ask probing questions, and get academic help from peers and college tutors. In addition, they participate in enrichment and motivational activities that make college seem attainable. Their self-image improves, and they become academically successful leaders and role models for other students.

Concurrent Enrollment
GATE/Honors
CJUSD Honors courses are core Math, English and Science courses that are designed to meet the needs of GATE students and other students who are ready and willing to tackle more rigorous curriculum. The programs are designed to increase the critical thinking, analysis, and writing skills necessary to succeed in upper level courses.
Honors programs in our district are articulated with Advanced Placement (AP) courses in the same subject areas so that the Honors work will better prepare students to take these college-level courses and earn college credit while still in high school.
Honors courses are typically designed for 9th and 10th-grade students. Currently, CJUSD offers Honors courses in the following areas: Geometry, Algebra II, Biology, Anatomy & Physiology, English I, and English II.
How Do I Enroll in Honors Classes?
It's easy to enroll!
- Talk to an Honors about the course you want to take. Discuss the course workload and any preparation you might need.
- Meet with your counselor and sign up for the class for the following term.
- Make sure to complete any summer reading and study help guides you receive.

Science & Engineering Fair
All schools in the Colton Joint Unified School District are invited to participate in the District Science & Engineering Fair, held each January. Students can compete in 31 different categories, including electronics, biochemistry, computational systems, and mathematics. Participants design and conduct their experiments, compile a comprehensive report, and present their findings in a dissertation-style defense before judges.
Each school selects top projects from its science fair to advance to the district-level competition. Winners from the district fair move on to the regional fair, where many qualify for prestigious events such as the California State Science Fair, Broadcom MASTERS, the Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF), or the Google Science Fair. These competitions offer students the chance to win scholarships and gain national and international recognition for their work.
