Vision 2030: Advancing the CJUSD Plan
Through the Design Plan, we created the conditions for systemic improvement. With Vision 2030, we are directing that momentum toward our most important goal, defining what student success looks like from Pre-K through graduation.
Designing the Next Chapter
This marks the culmination of a five-year strategic investment in moving CJUSD forward. Since its inception, we have worked to weave the Design Plan's philosophies and high expectations directly into the fabric of our district standards. Now, Colton Joint Unified School District is launching our next chapter: Vision 2030.
Since 2019, CJUSD has done something unique in public education by building the professional infrastructure and conditions for improvement before chasing quick outcomes. We are now transitioning from our current Design Plan to a unified 2030 framework.
The Pivot: From Adult Learning to Student Outcomes
Our next phase moves the focal point from how adults learn to defining exactly what students must know, do, and become by the year 2030.
This is not a top-down mandate: it is a community-owned process co-designed with educators, site leaders, students, and community voices to ensure every student thrives in a rapidly changing world.
Our Three Priorities: The 2030 Framework
To ensure coherence from the classroom to district leadership, the 2030 Framework is built on three tightly connected priorities:
- The Destination (The CJUSD Learner Profile): We are defining our shared destination, the core academic competencies, contemporary skills, durable learning habits, and civic readiness every CJUSD graduate will embody.
- The Pathway (PreK-12) Learner Progressions): We are translating those aspirations into a clear, developmental roadmap that shows exactly how students grow from novice to expert in every competency, from early learning through high school graduation.
- The Practice (The CJUSD Learning Model): We are creating an Instructional Playbook that specifies the daily classroom experiences, design principles, and "look-fors" that will make this vision a reality.
Our Path Forward: The Design Phases
Following a disciplined Discover, Design, and Deliver approach, here is how our community will build the 2030 Framework together:
Design Phase 1: Fall & Winter 2026 (Discover & Design)
Launch the Profile Development Team:
- A representative coalition of teachers, leaders, students and community voices will convene to imagine what's impossible.
Community Input:
- We will host inclusive surveys, focus groups, and town halls to gather diverse perspectives and build shared ownership.
Draft the Profile:
- The team will synthesize community feedback to identify and pressure-test the core competencies of the 2030 graduate.
Design Phase 2: Winter & Spring 2027 (The Progressions)
Backward Mapping:
- Teachers and instructional leaders will take the finalized competencies and map them backward from graduation down to PreK.
Operationalizing the Vision:
- The Learner Profile will shift from aspirational language to a practical tool used in PLC conversations and curriculum refinement.
Design Phase 3: Spring 2027 (The Learning Model)
Defining Adoption:
- We will outline clear Design Principles based on how students learn and develop.
The Instructional Playbook:
- We will finalize teacher and student "look-fors" to align our classroom practices district-wide.
Strategic Plan Update:
- The district's overarching strategic plan will be updated to support the implementation of this new framework.
Design Phase 4: Spring 2027 & Beyond (Deliver & Adopt)
Board Adoption:
- The final CJUSD Learner Profile will be presented to the Executive Cabinet and Board of Education, serving as our formal governance commitment to our students' futures.
System Integration:
- We will begin brining the 2030 Framework to life across all campuses, utilizing our Teaching for Effective Learning (TEL) cohorts as starting places.
